A manufacturing environment offers workers a rewarding career with ample room for professional growth. Columbia Steel currently has a wide range of available roles, including many entry-level positions for people who want to get into the industry and learn new skills. And, learn they do. After just 60 to 90 days of training, new staff typically move into other roles at Columbia, with greater responsibility and more pay. Of course, we also offer positions that require more experience or specific certifications, like welders, mechanics, electricians or inspectors.

Our Ongoing Recruiting Efforts

We’re passionate about spreading the message that Columbia Steel is a great place to work. Our recruiting team uses every available resource to search for a broad field of candidates to join the company.

Resources we frequently turn to are temp-to-hire employment agencies and state agencies, such as WorkSource Washington in Clark and Cowlitz counties and WorkSource Oregon on our side of the Columbia River. These partnerships enable us to tap into a larger group of potential applicants for our open positions, as do postings on several online job boards.

We also foster ongoing relationships with local community colleges and trade schools to connect with students who are about to enter the workforce. Our recruiters visit organizations like Portland Community College and the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center to expose students to the benefits of pursuing a manufacturing career, particularly those already working towards a trade certification. We love giving these students their first jobs out of school and, in the process, helping them shape the course of their careers.

We also focus on connecting with candidates who might not typically consider manufacturing work. This includes efforts to recruit women to help increase their representation in our industry and hiring people with no prior experience in manufacturing to provide them with exposure to potential lifelong careers.

Since 1901, we’ve employed workers who live and raise families here in the Pacific Northwest. During that time, we’ve focused on providing a stable workplace they can rely on. One sign of our success in this regard is our large group of long-tenured employees, including 64 people who’ve worked here for at least 20 years. Ten of those employees have been here for at least 40 years.
