Find Your Best Career at Columbia Steel
Lately, you’ve probably seen help-wanted signs at nearly every business you visit. That’s because there are a lot of open jobs right now, but not enough workers to fill them. In fact, earlier this year, Oregon had more job openings than unemployed workers. With the numbers in their favor, job-seekers can be more selective in the opportunities they pursue. We know that, and we’re taking action. We’re doubling down on our recruiting efforts to meet as many job-seekers as possible to help them discover the advantages of building a career at Columbia Steel.
Making Things that Matter
When meeting new candidates, one of our priorities is talking about the important work they’ll be doing as a member of our team. We manufacture wear parts that keep critical industries running. Organizations in construction, mining, energy and more, all use our products because they’re reliable and durable, which is something that often sets us apart from our competitors. Whatever role a candidate fills, from accounting to sales or the manufacturing floor, their work helps produce high quality products, proudly made in the U.S.A. In fact, our team shows up to work every day with pride in making things that matter. Many job-seekers find that added sense of purpose a very attractive reason to become part of the Columbia Steel family.
Openings at Every Job Level
Candidates who want to join us in our mission of making things that matter will find many exciting opportunities here. A manufacturing environment offers workers a rewarding career with ample room for professional growth. Columbia Steel currently has a wide range of available roles, including many entry-level positions for people who want to get into the industry and learn new skills. And, learn they do. After just 60 to 90 days of training, new staff typically move into other roles at Columbia, with greater responsibility and more pay. Of course, we also offer positions that require more experience or specific certifications, like welders, mechanics, electricians or inspectors.
Competitive Pay and Benefits
We also want to ensure that our employees have the opportunity to thrive both on- and off-the-job. That’s why our employees enjoy unparalleled benefits along with competitive pay. All full-time employees can choose between two different health plans that offer comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits. They can also save for retirement by participating in our 401(k) program (either traditional or Roth), with a company match. Other benefits include:
> Union and non-union retirement plans.
> Tuition assistance after a year of employment.
> Personal protective equipment reimbursement for safety boots and glasses.
> Paid training to gain certifications for some positions.
> Discounts with local partners like Adidas® and Columbia Sportswear.
> Employee events like company picnics, car shows and golf tournaments.
Columbia Steel also operates around-the-clock, which can offer employees flexibility to best fit their needs.
Our Ongoing Recruiting Efforts
We’re passionate about spreading the message that Columbia Steel is a great place to work. Our recruiting team uses every available resource to search for a broad field of candidates to join the company.
Resources we frequently turn to are temp-to-hire employment agencies and state agencies, such as WorkSource Washington in Clark and Cowlitz counties and WorkSource Oregon on our side of the Columbia River. These partnerships enable us to tap into a larger group of potential applicants for our open positions, as do postings on several online job boards.
We also foster ongoing relationships with local community colleges and trade schools to connect with students who are about to enter the workforce. Our recruiters visit organizations like Portland Community College and the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center to expose students to the benefits of pursuing a manufacturing career, particularly those already working towards a trade certification. We love giving these students their first jobs out of school and, in the process, helping them shape the course of their careers.
We also focus on connecting with candidates who might not typically consider manufacturing work. This includes efforts to recruit women to help increase their representation in our industry and hiring people with no prior experience in manufacturing to provide them with exposure to potential lifelong careers.
We’d Love to Talk With You
Since 1901, we’ve employed workers who live and raise families here in the Pacific Northwest. During that time, we’ve focused on providing a stable workplace they can rely on. One sign of our success in this regard is our large group of long-tenured employees, including 64 people who’ve worked here for at least 20 years. Ten of those employees have been here for at least 40 years.
If you want to become a member of the Columbia Steel team, we’d love to start a conversation. You don’t need years of experience to join our team. Just bring your willingness to work hard; we can train the rest. To learn more about open positions, visit our career page and apply online.
